Rachel Howser

Junior Room Teacher

I have been teaching at Rotherham School since 2021.  Previously I taught at Orini Combined School which is a small rural school in the Waikato.  I was an Across Schools Leader for the Morrinsville Kahui Ako.  I have vast experience in Early Childhood and in Years 1-3 in Primary Schools.  I am very passionate about rural schools and want to see all the children succeed in the class.  I am enjoying being part of the community at Rotherham and seeing the children thrive in the “Best Little School in North Canterbury”.

My husband and family moved to Hanmer Springs and we are loving the lifestyle and living in the beautiful South Island.  We have three daughters and one grandchild.  I love reading, quilting, biking and spending time with my family.

I have been teaching at Rotherham School since 2004 and was appointed Principal in 2021.  I enjoy teaching and leading “the best little school in North Canterbury”.  I enjoy how there is a community and family feel about the school with the older students looking after the younger students. We are so lucky how supportive our parents and wider community are at this wonderful small rural school.

I live on a farm in Waiau along with my husband, daughter and son.  I enjoy skiing as I live close to Mt Lyford and getting out and about on our hill country farm.  I enjoy reading, cooking, exercising and spending time with my family.

I really enjoy working as office administrator in such a friendly welcoming school.  I work in the office four days a week Monday to Thursdays.  Each day it is great to interact with such cheerful, polite and happy children.

I grew up on North Canterbury farms, including Rotherham, thanks to my dad’s farming and fencing background and now live in Amberley.  I am married to Phil and have two daughters.  My background has varied from qualified librarian, to working my way through an overseas experience for 4 years. I was a nanny in England while I was studying for a degree.  I came home to study and graduated with a midwifery degree in 2002.  I worked as a midwife for over 10 years before doing a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching.

I love arts, crafts and journaling (both written and artistic), but mostly enjoy exploring.  I have explored much of the South Island with my family and would like to head up to the North Island next.
